How To Recycle An Airplane

A recycled jetliner produces tons of metal and millions of dollars in parts, but a mistake could cost hundreds of lives. Here's how the company that salvaged the plane from Lost does its destructive business.P
A car's typically just parted out once and then scrapped at the end of its life, but a jumbo jet is full of thousands of valuable parts that will be salvaged or recycled numerous times. One passenger plane may transition into service transporting packages, or off to commercial service in Africa, and then the fuselage used for training purposes.
Approximately 450 large aircraft are completely scrapped and disassembled each year, according to the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association, with another 5,900 passenger jets to be recycled by 2028 according to Boeing. Given the high prices for parts, dangerous materials, and the risk involved in recycling airplane parts it's not a job for any dismantling yard.P
"In short, it's not like the auto [recycling] business," says aviation archeologist and plane recycling expert Doug Scroggins, who was responsible for recycling the airliner that's the centerpiece for ABC's Lost and serves as managing director for ARC Aeropsace Industries. "If you sell an engine off an aircraft and it crashes, you're going to be spending a great deal of time in jail."
P

Transport The Aircraft To Its FInal Resting Place
Strip The Planes Of Hazardous Materials
A modern aircraft is full of toxic and even radioactive materials as well as hazardous fluids used to make the plane operate. De-icing fluid runoff has been known to turn creeks bright orangeand spraying planes with pesticides was once a common practice. Whether on-site or elsewhere, anything posing a danger to workers is carefully removed according to a strict set of regulations.
Remove The Engine
The engine is the single most valuable part of an aircraft and can be resold whole or parted out. A used engine is worth millions sold directly and many are rented out hourly for prices around $20-25,000 per monthP
"One engine has probably been on 50 airplanes," says Scroggins. "While you and I are talking, engines are being moved between airplanes, and parts are being pulled out to make better engines and then going on a wing."
Remove The Avionics And Electronics
Many of the thousands of valuable parts on a plane are the electronic bits, whether it's something as complex as the flight control computers, as important as a blackbox recorder, or as simple as the fuse for a coffee maker.
Gut The Interior
The interiors make up around 30% of the weight of a jetliner, and while the materials themselves aren't recyclable the highly specialized parts are.P
"When you're dealing with an automobile seat out of a car it may be worth $50 to $100," says Scroggins. "[With an aircraft] it can be worth as little as $450 or as much as $5,000."
Strip The Metals
A Boeing 747, once stripped, can produce 100 tons of valuable metals such as aluminum. According to AFRA, their members produce 30,000 tons of aluminum, 1,800 tons of special alloys, and 600 tons of parts every year.
Snag The Landing Gear
Surprisingly, after the engines the most valuable part of an aircraft is its landing gear. A used landing gear off of a Boeing 777 costs into the millions. But in order to get at the landing gear the plane has to be propped up on some sort of support so the gear can be stripped.
Send It To The Shredder
Once all the valuable parts of plane are gone and there's nothing left that anyone would want it's finally shredded.
But Wait, There's More
Not all planes go to the shredder. A few are saved to produce films. Stcoggings' planes have been used in films like War Of The Worlds and, most famously, the Delta Lockheed L-1011 in Lost. Other uses for a plane's shell includes training for flight attendants, pilots, and first-responders.

There are large aircraft recyclers in many countries, typically located at commercial airports or former military bases. These facilities include a runway large enough to support a jetliner and plenty of space for storing planes. Not all vehicles are immediately scrapped, but just stored until the plane's owners decide what to do with them.PP

The Grand Aviation Chandelier Design Concept - InterFlight Studio

The Grand Aviation Chandelier Design Concept
InterFlight Studio

This amazing and wonderful chandelier design was thought up by the in-house design team at InterFlight Studio.  Using 100% real parts from an actual aircraft, this chandelier will stand apart from all other aviation related designs.  No one else in the world is making chandeliers from parts of an old airplane except InterFlight Studio.

Do you want to put something really impressive in that new lobby you have being built?, Or perhaps you have a home with really high ceilings.

No matter what your design needs are, InterFlight Studio can help you come up with a design that is truely over the top, original, and stands the test of time.  This chandelier already has so much history, and that history will only get richer as mankinds understanding of flight enters it's new chapter into space.

This chandelier is made with the cowling from a plane engine, and two sizes of turbine blades circle around the cowling.  For the actual lighting part of this design piece, actual lighting from airport runways were used to create a wonderful blue color.  This art piece is for someone and someplace very special.

DAVID GALE - Metal Artist

David Gale started this work of art as a tribute to the old models that were created for display in the 50's.  He made the tooling for the core as well as wood and plastic patterns for the airplanes' steel structures.  The end result is a unique hand made aircraft with a lamp (with dimmer) designed so when lit, the glow lights up the aircraft, giving the illusion of an aircraft flying at night with its cabin lights on.

The Super Constellation is possibly one of the most beautifully balanced aircraft ever designed.  The dolphin like overall shape and tail design have distinguished this aircraft from the rest.

John Travolta is among the aviation connoisseurs and art collectors, one of the proud owners of an original David Gale lamp.

The Artist:  "I have always liked the exterior shapes of classic aircraft from the 30's through the 50's.  Especially the early jets like the P-80, F-86, Meteor, and MIG-15, and all commercial transports of the 40's and 50's.

In my artwork, I use many of the techniques, riveting, sheet metal etc used in aircraft and automobiles.  Aircraft structure is almost always very strong yet as lightweight as possible, a type of idealized construction.  I try to keep the aesthetics of aircraft alive but add new materials and function to go beyond the creation of a straight sculpture."

David Gale, a native of the Los Angeles area in California, has been an artist as long as he can remember.  With a passion for airplanes and race cars, he creates work of art with a function.  David is mostly impressed with the way that aircraft look despite the fact that their designers concentrated on function and not on aesthetics per se.  Aircraft are engineered and designed with factors in mind other than aesthetics such as speed, airflow, weight, etc.  The fact that aircraft are beautiful is unintentional.  But it is this spontaneous beauty that moves David Gale to create a new function for parts that have lost their function.

Introducing a piece by Facundo Poj.  This very special, one of a kind bench was made entirely from original aircraft parts.  Embellishing the parts are some bamboo strips on either end of the bench, making it the perfect spot to set your coffee cup, wine glass, or little snack on.  This bench is of course made entirely of aluminum, however it is very comfortable.  Designed from the wing flaps from an aircraft, these pieces are put together perfectly to give you relaxed comfort.

This piece works well in a home or office.  It would be a great conversation piece for the office or lobby, because this piece attracts people whereever it goes.

Scimitar Functions as Wonderful Design Addition

www.interflightstudio.com

The Scimitar, by Flight Studio Design, is a rare beautiful propeller blade, that our design team has made into a sculpture that can be enjoyed in the home or office.  This rare artifact will remind you always of the aviation world and the majestic quality of flight.  Made from aircraft titanium, this sculpture piece will bring you daily inspiration, and serve as a wise investment in the future.  There were only 200 original planes made that used this type of propeller, so supply is VERY limited.  This sculpture piece is for someone who wants to hold on to a valuable piece of aviation history.

InterFlight Studio is the only design company to make these wonderful pieces.  Interior designer Michael Dawkins, purchased one for his home, and now we are offering them to the public.  Take a look at what a beautiful addition this can be to any room.

FACUNDO POJ

ARTIST STATEMENT:
The first time I walked through an aircraft cemetery, I was in awe at these dead lords of the air. Large commercial airplanes laying on their bellies, missing tails and noses, fuselages cut open like the carcass of a giant mammoth. I asked the manager of the yard what happened to the carcass once all the usable spare parts had been taken away and sold. He said "well, I guess we cut them up to get them ready to become beer cans". Beer cans. My soul was in tears. These flying dragons, these noble machines, are one of man's greatest achievements. A loyal craft which had taken people's dreams all around the world countless times. Beer cans...
I picked up a few parts on my pickup truck. I refused to let their souls be chopped up and their bodies be turned into such un-noble devices.
I gave these beautifully crafted and engineered objects new meaning, new life, new purpose. I decided that "rebirth" was a much more fitting term for their souls, rather than "recycle".

BIOGRAPHY
Facundo is a Miami based designer born in Argentina in 1971. He was trained as a master builder back in his native Buenos Aires and moved to Boston in the early 1990's where he graduated from Architecture school and also received a Masters Degree in Urban Affairs and Environmental Problems. Poj is a handcrafter of furniture and objects. His use of materials is definitely on the unconventional side of the spectrum. Poj spends much of his time looking for treasures in junk yards. He searches for objects with a soul and a lasting quality to them. Mr. Poj ponders on the subject of memory and historic value. Historic value not at the superficial level of style and form, but at a deeper level, he values the biography of objects and materials.
Poj also invests much energy researching new ways of using materials of great qualities which are not that far into the unconventional, but which have not fallen yet into the hands of large scale mainstream manufacturing. All his furniture pieces are designed through high technology, handcrafted, and built for life.
Mr. Poj's design services and exclusive handcrafted pieces have been sought not only by private clients and collectors, but also by important corporate clients such as Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton USA, Veuve Clicquot, Ecoist, Dom Perignon, Citrine by the Stones, Simmons of Argentina and others.

ANTONIO PEREZ MELERO

BIOGRAPHY:
Born in Spain, PEREZ MELERO began his career in Venezuela where he lived from the late 1950's until the early 1980's. Maintaining workshops in Caracas and New York, he is an artist who exhibits his work internationally and is in public collections which include the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, CANTV, Fundarte, the American Institute of Architects, Intel Corporation, the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
My 3-dimensional constructions are built mostly from wood, paper, canvas and acrylic paint. Their ideas evolve from an organic and intuitive process. The final work is a combination of my creative vision and a highly organized process employing disciplines of geometry and applied design.
Viewers should interact physically with my constructions. They need to walk around them and view them from different perspectives. Up close one can see the detailed and intricate methods of their construction. From further back, one can appreciate their total effect. Color and light and how they interact are central to my work. Color is painted on pieces of wood attached to a high-contrast geometric background. Light penetrates between them, reflecting color from one to another and on the background.
These reflected colors seem to mix in the air and produce an impression of others.
As light sources change angle or intensity, and as the viewer moves around the work, new colors can be perceived even though they aren't really there.
The interaction between color and light has produced an illusion.
