How To Recycle An Airplane
A recycled jetliner produces tons of metal and millions of dollars in parts, but a mistake could cost hundreds of lives. Here's how the company that salvaged the plane from Lost does its destructive business.
A car's typically just parted out once and then scrapped at the end of its life, but a jumbo jet is full of thousands of valuable parts that will be salvaged or recycled numerous times. One passenger plane may transition into service transporting packages, or off to commercial service in Africa, and then the fuselage used for training purposes.
Approximately 450 large aircraft are completely scrapped and disassembled each year, according to the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association, with another 5,900 passenger jets to be recycled by 2028 according to Boeing. Given the high prices for parts, dangerous materials, and the risk involved in recycling airplane parts it's not a job for any dismantling yard.
"In short, it's not like the auto [recycling] business," says aviation archeologist and plane recycling expert Doug Scroggins, who was responsible for recycling the airliner that's the centerpiece for ABC's Lost and serves as managing director for ARC Aeropsace Industries. "If you sell an engine off an aircraft and it crashes, you're going to be spending a great deal of time in jail."

"One engine has probably been on 50 airplanes," says Scroggins. "While you and I are talking, engines are being moved between airplanes, and parts are being pulled out to make better engines and then going on a wing."

"When you're dealing with an automobile seat out of a car it may be worth $50 to $100," says Scroggins. "[With an aircraft] it can be worth as little as $450 or as much as $5,000."

A Boeing 747, once stripped, can produce 100 tons of valuable metals such as aluminum. According to AFRA, their members produce 30,000 tons of aluminum, 1,800 tons of special alloys, and 600 tons of parts every year.

Snag The Landing Gear
Surprisingly, after the engines the most valuable part of an aircraft is its landing gear. A used landing gear off of a Boeing 777 costs into the millions. But in order to get at the landing gear the plane has to be propped up on some sort of support so the gear can be stripped.

The Next Generation of Aircraft
InterFlight Studio knows that there will always be a new generation of aircraft, one better than the last. And even better for them, because InterFlight Studio has recently begun designing their own products and designs for market using only the original parts from recycled aircraft.
It is a brilliant idea, to upcycle parts from a retired plane. And what better place to imagine these enormous and modern design pieces, why not place them where they came from to start with, an airport!
It is easy to see how well the aircraft parts made into unique design pieces can work in an airport. They can give the airport a discussion piece for everyone who walks through it. The pieces themselves will help people to think of pleasant things while they fly/walk through the airport. Perhaps maybe art is the way to re-teach people the positive aspects of flight. In today's modern society, we often forget how new this technology is to the human race, and how much it changed the world we are living in today.

People will find these pieces interesting, and a way to appreciate the flights of the recent past.

With the involvement and enthusiasm of people like you, recycling is back and so are thousands upon thousands of recycled products made from materials that would otherwise be piling up in our nation's landfills. It doesn't just make sense. It makes a huge difference to our environment, our quality of life, and our country's future.
Recycling is really just common sense, and until the "modern era," it was a common household activity. Before the 1920s, 70% of U.S. cities ran programs to recycle certain materials. During World War II, industry recycled and reused about 25% of the waste stream. Because of concern for the environment, recycling is again on the upswing. The nation's composting and recycling rate rose from 7.7% of the waste stream in 1960 to 17% in 1990. It's currently up to around 30%. California is at about 48%.
The Garbage Crisis
The world has changed a lot in the past century. From individually packaged food servings to disposable diapers, more garbage is generated now than ever before. The average American discards seven and a half pounds of garbage every day. This garbage, the solid waste stream, goes mostly to landfills, where it's compacted and buried. As the waste stream continues to grow, so will the pressures on our landfills, our resources, and our environment.

These chandeliers use the cowling from an original jet engine and turbine blades recycled from that same engine. There are also three original airport landing strip lights that illuminate this chandelier.

Green Design - Airplane Re-purposed
If you have fantasies of living like the Swiss Family Robinson or even the characters in Lost, this rainforest resort near Quepos, Costa Rica may be just the ticket. Situated on the edge of the Manuel Antonio National Park, the Costa Verde Resort features an incredible hotel suite set inside a 1965 Boeing 727 airplane. In its former life the airplane transported globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines, and it now serves as a two bedroom suite perched on the edge of the rainforest overlooking the beach and ocean.
Situated on the edge of the Manuel Antonio National Park, the Costa Verde Resort features an incredible hotel suite set inside a 1965 Boeing 727 airplane.The two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite also includes a kitchenette, flat-screen tvs, a dining room, and a terrace with an ocean view.'

This is an amazing idea, and great way to re purpose things. A guy decides to build a dream home from a retired 747 airplane in Malibu, CA.
Here’s how it works: buy a retired 747 for the paltry sum of $35,000. Register it with the FAA so pilots flying overhead don’t mistake the house for a downed aircraft. Disassemble the 230-foot long, 195-foot wide machine. Elevate the wings and tail stabilizers to use as a roof for the master bedroom. Create a roof for a detached art studio from a 50-foot long section of the upper fuselage. Add a guesthouse, constructing its roof from the remaining front part of the fuselage and the upper first-class cabin. The front of the airplane works well — for someone with absolutely no fear of flying — as a meditation gazebo, where the cockpit windows form a skylight. And since we’re in ranch country, use the cargo hold as an animal barn.
The philosophy behind the Malibu house, dubbed Wing House, has taken shape over time, like the disassembled parts of the plane. The 55-acre property previously belonged to costume designer Tony Duquette, who built more than 20 structures from found objects, and the rugged terrain favors multiple smaller structures.
New owner Francie Rehwald wanted curvilinear “feminine” shapes, and imagined a kind of floating roof set among the hills. An airplane wing sprang to architect David Hertz’s mind. The found shapes of the aircraft paradoxically echoed the indigenous feel that Duquette’s structures had established: “The 747 represented the single largest industrial achievement in modern history and its abandonment in the deserts make a statement about the obsolescence and ephemeral nature of our technology and our society.” In some sense, too, the airplane was like a giant aluminum can: a perfect metaphor for recycling — particularly because the airline industry is one most gluttonous users of aluminum cans. And design-wise, planes maximize space while minimizing materials.
Wing House will be completed by the end of this year.
